Mounts aren’t a prop. They serve the essential purpose of acting as a layer between the glass the original artwork. Have you noticed how some old pictures stick to the frame and you have to pull them out, most of the times spoiling them? Well this wouldn’t happen to the picture, if the mount is there. 

It also adds a break between the frame and art - it helps to ensure your eyes go on the art instead of the frame.
